Moving to a new country at five years old is no small thing. For Iván, arriving in Canada from Cartagena, Colombia, marked the beginning of a long journey filled with growth, hustle, and resilience.
In this episode of the Canada Student Network Podcast, Iván shares what it’s really like to grow up as an immigrant, balance full-time work and studies, and find his place in Canadian student life.

Adapting to Life in Canada Early On
Iván’s family first landed in Quebec, where things weren’t exactly lively.
“It was a bit of a cultural shock,” he recalls. “Quebec felt quiet, especially compared to Colombia.”
Eventually, they moved to Toronto, where Iván grew up. Despite early language challenges, he picked up English naturally by grade 2—thanks to a childhood friend who only spoke English.
“At home, we always spoke Spanish. That’s why I never lost the language.”
Building Community Through Soccer and School
From switching elementary schools to eventually settling into high school, Iván formed a tight-knit, multicultural group of friends—many of whom he met through soccer.
“There were Colombians, Italians, Middle Eastern friends... it was a great mix.”
Being surrounded by diversity helped Iván feel at home and navigate Toronto’s culture while staying close to his roots.
Balancing University and Full-Time Work 😮💨
Iván chose York University over TMU mainly because it was closer to home. But the real story? He worked and studied full-time.
“No excuses. At work, they treated me like any other employee.”
He managed classes in the evenings, and long days often ended with late-night study sessions and early morning shifts.
“I’d finish class at 10PM, get home, sleep a bit, and be up by 6 to work. Red Bull helped.”
How He Got Into the Stone Industry 🪨
Surprisingly, Iván didn’t study marketing just to end up in project management for a stone fabrication company. It all started with a visit to his dad’s job.
“My dad was doing a favor for a friend, and the shop owner asked if I was free that summer. I said yes—and learned everything.”
From polishing stone to handling clients, Iván became a Swiss Army knife in the shop. He stayed in the industry even after graduation.
What Helped Him Push Through
Despite the grind, Iván credits flexible employers and good professors who supported him with realistic deadlines and advice.
“I had a professor who really understood my situation. We still keep in touch.”
Making New Friends and Finding Your People
Because Iván started university a bit later than most of his peers (after a short soccer career in Colombia), he had to rebuild his social circle from scratch.
“Being open-minded is key. I believe people are what take you far in life.”
For him, friendships weren’t just social—they were strategic. Building connections led to opportunities.

Advice for Newcomers 💡
Here’s what Iván suggests if you’re just getting started in Canada:
On housing:
“University residences are convenient but expensive. Try to find roommates fast and rent a place together. You’ll save a lot.”
On food:
“Be open to new cuisines. You’ll be surprised at what you like.”
On mindset:
“It’s hard. But it’s worth it. Just keep going.”
Final Thoughts
Iván’s story is a reminder that success in Canada isn’t about luck—it’s about persistence, planning, and putting yourself out there.
“Being open, organized, and social—that’s what helped me make it.”
Whether you’re new to Canada or still figuring things out, Iván’s journey is proof that with the right mindset, you can thrive.
