Isa Patarroyo moved to Vancouver from Medellín, Colombia, ready for a fresh start. In this episode of the Canada Student Network Podcast, she opens up about the highs and lows of adjusting to life in BC — from making friends to surviving the rain and staying on top of her studies at BCIT.

Woman taking selfie with phone, text reads "Retos de vivir en otro país, Isa Patarroyo, British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), Gestión de Marketing."

Adapting to Vancouver as a Student

“People are colder here — but that pushed me to grow.”

Isa talks about how lonely her first few months were and how winter made everything harder. But slowly, she started joining school events, meeting people, and learning how to open up in a new environment. The emotional distance she felt at first helped her build emotional independence — a skill that’s now part of her identity.

Social Life & Making Friends

“Here, you are alone — you have to speak with people. That’s how you grow.”

Isa shares how being in Vancouver pushed her out of her comfort zone. Back in Colombia, social interaction was easy and constant. In Canada, it felt cold and quiet — unless she made the first move. Through BCIT events and clubs, she slowly built meaningful friendships, especially with other Latin American students.

Academic Life at BCIT

“BCIT is tough — but companies value it.”

Isa chose the Marketing Management program at BCIT after hearing great things from friends. She was surprised by the fast pace and workload, especially compared to her industrial design studies in Colombia. But she likes how practical the education is — and how well it connects to the job market. She also learned to be more organized and prioritize different parts of her life: academics, work, and personal wellbeing.

Cultural Differences & Identity

“In Colombia, everyone is the same. Here, I had to find myself again.”

Isa reflects on how growing up in a less diverse culture shaped her early identity. Moving to Canada helped her appreciate her background, including her Indian heritage through her mother. She also noticed a big change in how professors teach — less discussion, more direct instruction — but found it helpful for building discipline and structure in her day-to-day life.

Her Advice for Newcomers

“Be patient. It took me six months to feel okay.”

Isa’s advice is clear: don’t expect to feel comfortable right away. Let yourself go through the emotional ups and downs. Don’t rush friendships or decisions. Explore student events, talk to people, and give yourself space to grow. She recommends new students connect with Latin communities and find small routines that make Canada feel like home.
