Discover how two UBC students lead a 200-member acapella team while balancing studies, competitions, and campus life in Vancouver.
When you think of university clubs, you might picture low-key meetups or casual events. But for Nick and Josh, co-presidents of UBC Acapella, it’s more like Pitch Perfect in real life—vocal battles, 200-member concerts, and friendships built around music.
In this episode of the CANADA STUDENT NETWORK PODCAST, they share what it’s really like managing one of UBC’s biggest and most energetic student clubs.

How It All Started
Josh began his UBC journey at the Okanagan campus before transferring to Vancouver, while Nick jumped into acapella the moment he arrived in 2022. Both quickly found themselves immersed in rehearsals, competitions, and leadership.
A regular day?Class, then rehearsal. Sometimes smaller sectional practices. Most days end with singing—and a lot of laughing—with friends who share the same passion.
Is UBC Acapella Really Like Pitch Perfect?
Yes, and then some.
UBC Acapella has seven sub-groups, two of which compete yearly in high-level competitions across North America.
Regionals? Check.
Semifinals in California? Done.
Friendly rivalries? Definitely.
Even if you’re not in a competitive group, you’ll still perform in concerts every term and maybe even get a chance to be serenaded on campus during their iconic Acagrams—a Valentine’s Day tradition where members perform live for classmates or professors.
Balancing School and Singing
How do they do it?
Josh studies political science and history.
Nick is in kinesiology.
Their secret? Time-blocking and Google Calendar.
They admit it’s not always smooth, but learning to manage priorities and lead with confidence has been a huge part of their university growth. Public speaking, event planning, and building community—these are just as important as any class.
More Than Music: Building a Community
UBC Acapella isn’t just about singing. It’s a hub for connection.
Sock Wars: A year-end game of Manhunt with socks.
Coffee House: An open mic night with student-arranged music.
Weekly hangouts: Whether in the club room or out for food, the vibe is always welcoming.
Key takeaway: You don’t have to be the best singer to join—just bring good energy and a willingness to try.
What They Love About UBC & Vancouver
Despite the rising cost of living, Nick and Josh agree: UBC is one of the most beautiful campuses in the world.
Ocean views, mountain backdrops, and cherry blossoms in the spring.
Access to outdoor adventures like hiking and skating.
Random run-ins with Vancouver Canucks players at the on-campus rink.
Whether you're an international student or a local, UBC offers a unique lifestyle that blends academics, nature, and unforgettable memories.
Final Thoughts
From leading rehearsals to navigating life as full-time students, Nick and Josh show how getting involved in something you love can completely reshape your university experience. If you’re looking for connection, fun, and growth—UBC Acapella might just be your next move.
